So far Win 7 is the best yet and I'm really pleased although I can't help feel that the ethos behind Ubuntu is where i want to be. If there was anything as good as HRD on Linux then I think I'd be there in a flash and never look back...perhaps I need some sort of addiction councelling

Have you thought about running Windows 7 and using the virtual machine to run Ubuntu?

My son is a web developer and he is really happy with how stable Win7 is and has a large number of operating systems including Ubuntu and all the Windows flavours from Win95 to Vista running under the virtual machine. He says some Win95/8 software is more stable under VM than it was on a dedicated machine.
