Thanks for your comments David. I didn't try it without radials and have had mixed results so far. I think I need to do some analysis to see how effective it is as I'm not convinced that the % effectiveness is very high.

S5-7 noise sounds quite high to me. Do you think that is antenna based or as a function of the qth?

Hopefully this summer i'll be able to do some comparisons against a cobwebb and a long wire to be a bit more objective.

Nice setup you have there, I have installed a 6btv in my garden which is only 3x11 metres! it's in the centre on the lawn, (the XYL allowed this) because of the garden construction itself, it's soil down to 1 foot then hard core, I decided to concrete a steel post in (18in),then I mounted the antenna on to that I installed the DX radial plate with 24 quite short radials(longest was 2.5m shortest about 1m) but it made no difference atall to the signals, either out or in!! but still have s5-7 noise I am just about to installa couple of copper earth rods (if I can!!) to see if it makes any difference
73' Did you try your setup without radials first?

dear alex.i have the 160 meter version of this.i put most of the caps/resistors/smt,s in the wrong places to start.you trace looks ok but has a high noise level.does it change if the sdr,s not plugger in or not powered up.you will get that picture with nothing connected.i used mine with an old compaq 400 and found the mains psu very noisy so used and old win98se desktop instead.i used it in the line i/p and mic ok.as this is a direct conversion set the transformer has to be wired correctly or it will be very deaf.i prechecked my sdr on a sope 2c if the oscillator was running and getting to the chips.have used the pc,s built in sound card on all pc,s.check for loops from l1 and t1.can check one kit out if you like

Alex - I've had this problem with my Softrock 40. If I remember correctly, I think that in my case the issue was resolved by checking and correcting the audio connections to the sound-card. Make sure you have good solid connections to your sound-card and good luck!

Hi Angelo,

I've got to a point now where I have the Softrock working but I will need a new soundcard. I have heard that it is possible to use the electrically switched band pass filter and Faros so I'll give it a go when the next batch of kits are released. It is my first bit of homebrew and not very good ;-)

I like the idea of using the flex 1500. Its out of my range at the moment but if the prices start to come down then I'm sure I can find the money. I think I might look at a softrock for WSPR as well.

I've not been getting any good signals from the US or Canada for the last few weeks. It seems as though the good run I had over christamas has gone.

Hi Alex,
here is Angelo at the CT1JTQ ( ex i1js - iz1fgu ). I have been thinking a lot about an SDR to be used with FAROS pgm .
I went to the decision to use the new FLEX1500 , I had delay as its production was postponed, but still on that idea.
As far as FLEX 1500 will be shipped , I will give a test on it and, if no big problems will arise, repacing my FT 897 ( now in continous use since 2006 ).
All the best

So far Win 7 is the best yet and I'm really pleased although I can't help feel that the ethos behind Ubuntu is where i want to be. If there was anything as good as HRD on Linux then I think I'd be there in a flash and never look back...perhaps I need some sort of addiction councelling
