WOTA – LDW 206

Phil M0AYB put a post on the WOTA website to encourage us all to come and visit the Felltop cafe run by Bassenthwaite Rotary on top of Latrigg. I thought I’d get the kids up there with the XYL and that they’d enjoy the day out on a ‘massive mountain’ as they called it.

I had a secret agenda. Activate the summit, meet Phil and scoff some bacon without anyone noticing. We magaed to squeeze into the car park at the bottom of Skiddaw and strolled slowly up the fell. It was importnat to examine most of the stones on the path and to jump in as much sheep muck as possible according to the kids. Who was I to argue.

The walk should only take about 10-15 minutes or so for the not too young but we managed it in a lot longer which was quite enjoyable. The fell opens out onto views of Keswick, the Derwent and Bassnthwaite and Phils 9 ele beam that he’d brought with him!

After a very nice social time with Phil and Julian, G4ILO (who had popped up from Cockermouth) I managed a contact with G1JTD on Yoke and a too my dismay my pockets that had already been emptied didn’t have enough for a bacon roll. 2 out of 3 wasn’t bad at all. The lack of bacon was made up for by a gyrocopter that zoomed in and gave everyone a wave and a few circles round the summit before zooming off. leaving us with a growing crowd and a good view of the ants crawling up Skiddaw. A mornig out and a very nice fell of those with young families who could get involved. the crowds even threw in a few ‘What are you doings?’ and a G8 Who was looking to move back to Cumbria. Every WOTA activation needs encouragement like bacon rolls at the summit or gyrocpoters, or both!
