Another (relatively) successfull update to WordPress

It was fingers crossedd again and upload the new files. wordpress update time again and this time went with some now all too familiar hitches. The automatic upgrade didn’t work so I’ve ditched the plugin for good now and there seemed to be a few owership issues which my host kindly sorted out for me.

it still astounds me how this system never seems to smoothly upgrade for me. At least this time there wasn’t anything lost on the way through.

WordPress 2.6

After the fiasco of upgrading to wordpress 2.5 and 2.5.1 – Following the database destruction I am reluctant to do any upgrading at the moment. Some firm testing will have to be done before I part with the one I can cope with.

Just in case it doesn’t work too well i’ll be leaving it on XAMPP for a few more weeks and checking the forums for the inevitable questions about what happened to this or that!

Needless to say that WordPress automatic upgrade plugin works for plugins but not for the site. I’m not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing really.

Changes at work

Because of some changes at work posting via the web during the day is going to be a problem. So I’m attempting to set up a blog by email which just isn’t working one bit. Shame really. I’ll carry on trying and post back when it’s actually working!

There seem to be a number of issues with WordPress that are biting my installation. Mix this with an odd ftp problem with my host and this helps to keep this month as a month of pointless fiddling.

Having had to reinstall the whole shooting match and losing the visual editor, ability to edit posts, delete files and folders from my host I’m getting to the point where I’ll be looking for a new CMS if I can’t get this sorted out. So in preparation I’ve install XAMPP onto a flash drive for offline work to try and replicate the faults but so far it’s just not happening.

What should be a simple thing is both frustrating and time consuming. These oh-so-simple systems tend to have hidden caveats or features that are adding to not just mine but a lot of other woes.

So after some major time wasting by myself the problems have been fixed. All down to mod security and the host end.

just for reference the symptoms were:

1. Could not upload any media

2. Could not edit or save edits to any pages, post, plugins or widgets

Here’s the long list of things I tried and eventually ended up doing out of desperation

Reinstall WP2.5
Install WP2.5.1
Clear all caches and cookies
Searched WP forums for possible solutions
Wasted loads of time trying things that didn’t work
Posted on WP forums asking for help – no-one came
Deleted all files from my host (after backing up)
Reinstalled WP2.3.2 and couldn’t recover database
Upgraded using WPAU plugin to WP2.5
Tried to recover database again
Failed
Tried again and again and again
Failed again and again and again
Considered using other CMS like drupal or joomla
Installed XAMPP and WP2.3.2 / WP2.5 and WP2.5 on a flash drive to try and recreate problems – no success
Redirected my whole site to old WP.com site
Tried to relsove through WP IRC. No one about
Decided that this was a very good way of backing up seeing as everything else went to the dogs
Contacted my host and within 15 had the problem solved.

Can you tell that this has cheesed me off?

I’ve switched hosts

Installed WordPress (which I might add is excellent and now provides the ‘no excuse for a bad site even if you are an IT muppet). Using my new hosts installation tool ‘Fantastico’ which it quite clearly is

Started the sorting out process…loads to do and not much time to do it in. A load of the pages need refilling and tarting up but thanks to my current best buddies for making this possible………

It looks like either I didn’t read the small print or I’ve been sold a pup but I can’t use my existing host to have wordpress as my only content management thing. Thats a real shame to me…bugger

So now to transfer domain and guff from newnet to someone else who is really cheap

WordPress, Hopeless at IT & short on time

I’ve been messing about on and off with web pages and blogs…mostly off I might say but I’ve always never really had the time to learn about these tools. So last night in a fit of insomnia I decided to have a longer look at wordpress. I like the Terra Firma theme from node thirty three that I use of my website www.g7kse.co.uk but couldn’t use it with blogger or at least the editing of CSS confused the crap out of me and it ended up looking nothing like what I wanted.

Being able to post easily is also what I’m after so WordPress pretty much sold itself. Trouble is I couldn’t install it on my site…so Install4free to the rescue, lets see how they can get on with it when they get the chance to install everything for me
